Ideas for Web Design

Whenever a web designer gets a web design project, he or she will require to take a step back and go through the research process in order to complete the job. The research process is a tedious process, it determines how well, and successful will the result of your web design. Ideas for web design will share with you how to go through that research process smoothly and obtain results.

One fine day, you received a call from some client and he requests you to design a website for his company. Over the phone, he briefly tells you what his company is about and asks about the prices, you then fixed an appointment with him for discussion. You will probably get excited about it and starts to get more details of the company by checking them on Google, and thinks about some prelim ideas for the website. At this stage, your research process has already started.

After meeting up with the client, you get a lot of details that will assist you in your design process.
This details applies even when you are designing a personal website.

1. Nature of the Company

2. Client Preferences (Example websites?)

3. Target Audiences (kids? Young adults? Everyone in the world?)

4. Platform (Flash? Html? Php? Asp? )

By organizing these details, you get a bigger picture of:

1. What are you going to design?

2. What style of design are you approaching?

3. Whom you should design for?

4. How will your design work?

5. How will your design please both the audiences and the client in order to be successful?

With the information you have on hand, its time to determine the style. For a start, you should base on the client’s description of his company, his nature of the company to give a rough gauge on the design style. Examples below:

Example 1:

Web Hosting business >> High tech web design, sleek and professional design

Example 2:

Dolls and Toys business >> Kiddy, Girly, Colorful, Fun design

Having a good and suitable color theme on your web design will give users a pleasing experience while surfing through the web site you designed. One of the important techniques is to get a color chart from your local art store or use some color chooser tools to aid in your color selection. Your color theme will affect the mood and feel you want to create.
Colors also have their own meanings. For example, white is clean, blue is cool and corporate, having a white and blue color theme gives you a clean and corporate web design. Orange and yellow are warm and friendly colors, Grey is cool, combining a Orange-Grey theme will give you a friendly and fun mood. Dark colors are also popular among many, because they easily matched other bright colors. A common match is using a black background and light colored text as a combination.

There are thousands and one meaning to choose your color theme. Whether your color theme turns out successful depends heavily on the first step “Determining the style” of your website.

After getting the colors done, its time to think about the graphics and images. As a graphic says a thousand words, it is good to think about how you want to approach this portion. Here are some recommendations you can try:

1. Stock photos – Some are free, some requires you to pay a certain amount before providing you with high resolutions image. If your client has the money and there are suitable photos he would like to use, this is the way to go. Searching in Google for “stock photos” will give you plenty of results on this.

2. Take your own photos – When budget is involve, usually the project will require you to take a relevant photos and use them as supporting images on the website. Having a mid-range camera should do the trick as images for website are all on low resolution. Seldom there is a chance for you to use an image more than 640 x 480 pixels.

3. Creating Graphics Images – A web design will always need custom-made graphics images. For example, icons for a Shoe section, button for submitting information. You will need some skills in creating the graphics of your needs, or you will feel stuck while designing. Consider looking for tutorials on creating certain effects, like rounded corners, Mac alike buttons, pattern backgrounds and more. Learn about vector graphics tool like Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Fireworks. They can help you to create graphics, mockups and layout fast and efficiently. This will greatly aid in your next web design project.

If you already have some inspiration on how to design the layout, great, but if you do not, consider looking at related websites for some references on how they are being done. A search in Google also reveals some websites of the same genre. You can also check out ready-made templatesas well. I am not teaching you to copy exactly, but as a new learner, you should take reference and see how they are being designed.

Sources of Inspirations of a Web

I am a web designer. I admit that, it isn’t always easy to find the right design for my clients. The main reason is of course everyone has different tastes. And different industries have different norms. Below is a non-exhaustive list of sources that inspire me. And help me to better guide my clients.

The first thing I do is a general research. In this research I take a look at the websites I can find in the same industry. This will help me to better understand specific needs of my clients. I also ask my clients to show me websites they really like and show me their competitor websites. I also make sure to ask them the colors they like the most. It is important that the colors they like blends well with their corporate identity. Corporate identity is the combination of their logo and the colors they have already used in their past promotions, advertising materials, business cards etc. I also try to get some idea of what design elements my client likes the most. Design elements are such things as fonts, social media icons, sliders, display of featured work and so and so forth. At this stage most of the time I have a fair idea of my clients needs.

Next stage is to investigate if what my client needs could be accomplished by modifying an existing design or if the design and development work needs to be done from scratch. You may ask me where I ind an existing design I can modify. This is a process of looking through template sites. If I can find a decent design that can be modified to match my clients needs. I am in luck. This is because the existing design will help me to work considerably less. Which will make the end design work much more affordable in the end. And most of the time my clients are happy if I can provide lower rates without compromising from the quality of the end result.

Effective Web Designers

A web designer’s life is very complicated. Even though a lot of them work in the comfort of their own homes, they still face the same problems that other workers do – losing focus, failing to deliver work or creating ineffective outputs. If this is you, you need these habits to get you back on track.

Habit 1: Have a Simple and Uncluttered Mindset

Creativity and inspiration begins in the mind. This is why it is hard to create something great if your mind is filled with unnecessary thoughts. If you find yourself constantly trapped in your thoughts, you should find some ways to purge them out of your system. Try meditating or just step back and do something else.

Habit 2: Know the Big Picture

Before you create anything, you should have the big picture in mind. This pertains to the image of how you want your work to turn out. While some artists can work in a freestyle manner, it is still better to have a clear picture of what you want to create prior to starting.

Habit 3: Work or Perish

Once you have the right mindset and you know your vision, you can start working. There will always be times when it is hard to get your creative juices flowing but you must work. In fact, you should strive to work harder in those tough times.

Habit 4: Understand How People Think

A web designer does more than create amazing pictures or graphics. For your designs to be effective, you should also know how people think. Remember that web pages are not only designed to provide information but also designed to sell products or services. It is very important to create fast pages that are direct to the point and can be easily understood.

Habit 5: Have an Eye for the Right Colors

If you have visited a website that has obscenely bright colors that are not appropriate for its topic, then you probably hit the ‘back’ button as fast as you can. This is what visitors do if you fail to choose the right color for a particular website. Always consider the niche when you are choosing your colors. It may be self explanatory but some designers still forget about this.

Habit 6: Aim to Give Value

It is depressing to see how many web designers have become slaves to money. They create designs not to give value but just to make some money. A good designer will always aim to give more than what he is paid for.

Habit 7: Find Some Inspiration

You should always take the time to look for some inspiration. An artist’s work is nothing more than a product of his or her passion. Keep your passion alive by inspiring yourself every day. You can do this by taking a look at other people’s work or joining communities that share the same interest.

Web Designing For All Beginners

With the ongoing advancement in technology, the web design and development industry is witnessing significant changes in terms of development and increasing popularity. And in this course, websites have come up as the most convenient and needed choice of tool for selling and making business. No wonder, this tech-inclusion has prompted global entrepreneurs and businessmen to create online strategies for their offline businesses.

Numerous websites and portals have come up, aimed at flourishing businesses, economies, communities, ideas and lives across the globe through the web. So, it becomes crucial to have a brief or glimpse to the realm of web industry. Web designing is considered as one of the major phenomena that has largely influenced the digital industry. And just like the fashion industry, the trends in web development industry too keeps changing unalarmingly. This is why, it is important for developers and webmasters to get themselves aware of the latest trends that would help them strategize their web solutions for better results.

Understanding Web Design In Brief

In simple words, it is a brief interaction between a human and a web-enabled device. The first thing that you see on your desktop screen or on your smartphone is your first initial interaction with the world of web design. Some create an ever-lasting impression while others fail to do so. This post is all about how to create that ever-impressive website design and things to keep in mind while heading for it.

How To Create An Impressive Web Design

Before we begin, let us have a look on one of the basic fundamentals of the web designing industry i.e “Web designing is not a science or technology, it’s an art”. So always keep your creative hand first followed by the technical expertise. Here are few tips that should be followed while designing to get the desired web presence on web:

Inspirational Layout: Before deciding to create a website for the project, make sure you have an idea for it. This idea is actually called the inspiration. Creating an out of the box website is only possible if your design has an inspirational layout. Get ideas from wherever you can and think of materializing it in the most impressive way. This will help you make your web design the new pulse of the digital market.

Visibility: The second most important thing to consider is the visibility. It is very important to create an appealing design which is high on visibility quotient and eye-catchy factor. Being a beginner, you can take the assistance from an expert designer to get some new ideas, concepts and tricks.

Target Audience: Always know of your target group before initializing the process of web design and development. Knowing the target audience of the website helps in getting a rough idea of the website’s success in near future.

Functionality: Apart from these visible features there is one key factor that cannot be overlooked, and that is the functionality of a website. This helps in executing the designing & development process in the best possible manner. Being a novice designer, you must know the objective and function for which the design is actually being created for.

Add Functional Attributes: Functions like Content, Colour, Font, Navigation, Responsiveness and Search engine optimization should be specifically added and looked up for while designing. Inculcation of all these factors can significantly help in creating a trend-setting website.

Inspire Others With Perfect Web

In our daily lives we all want to see something new and unique in our surroundings, at homes and offices, at shopping complexes etc. And there is nothing wrong with this, as we all love inventing new things and to use new products, which inspires us, which influence our lives. With this, the more new we will do, the more people will start to follow us, the more we will start inspiring others. Similarly, we must try to bring changes in web designs of our websites by doing something new, by playing with web design templates, by introducing new colors, by changing the logo, etc. However, if you are a beginner or don’t know anything about web designing then you should leave it on a well established and widely known web design company to do this for you.

Moreover, if you will not hire a well known company and choose to go with a newly established one, you would probably end up on a losing side, as to invent something unique or to produce something which has never been done needs a lot of experience and expertise. And, it is quite clear that a newly launched company would neither have experience nor expertise. Whereas, a well reputed web design firm would have a dedicated team of designers and developers, which will not only be highly skilled ones but also possess immense expertise in their respective area of working. They all would be well aware of Flash web design, templates, finest color combinations, generating high quality images as per the requirements, etc.

However, before you hire a famous website design company to get your websites designed and developed in a certain manner so that you can inspire others with perfect web designs of your websites, you must verify the credibility of that company. Apart from this, also give importance to pricing, as the lower price you would pay for getting all this done, the more you can spend on other marketing tricks related to your business in order to generate more revenue. Moreover, you should also check whether the company is offering you any kind of support after service for at least a month or so or not, because there are chances when flash does not work in order or something like that and these issues must be sorted out in time. Therefore, support after service is a must, and a good & well reputed website design company generally gives that to its clients.

Finding Website Design Inspiration

Website design inspiration can be found in any number of places, from art galleries and instruction books to online showcases and portfolios, just to name a few.

But to tap into one of the most profound and limitless sources of timeless design ideas, you must put down the books, step away from the keyboard and walk outside.

For any and every aspect of design, nature is the true master. After all, what human artist could surpass nature in its ability to mix colors, create textures, evoke emotion and balance form and function?

The challenge of striking the right balance of color and tone can test the mettle of even the most seasoned designer. There are many resources online that can help you experiment with color and try out palettes, but there is no better source to guide you than nature.

Nature has an uncanny ability to blend just the right tones and hues to achieve visual harmony. In the world around you, you can find a perfectly balanced palette to match every emotion, every mood and every purpose.

Drawing upon nature’s palettes can make your website just as unique as the landscape from which it takes its inspiration, providing a distinctive feel that will be a welcome breath of fresh air in comparison to the cold corporate websites your customers have grown tired of.

One of the best ways to use the colors found in nature is to create a palette based on a photograph. There are several web-based tools that allow you to do this. Simply upload an image, and these tools will automatically generate a palette that you can apply in your design.

Nearly all textures found on the Web are designed to emulate real textures found in nature. When implemented in conjunction with typography, color and lighting, these textures create a browsing environment that feels more organic and engaging to the end user.

Textures also play a key role in interface design. Applying natural textures to page components such as buttons, sliders and forms can make them feel more tactile and provide important visual cues to guide users as they interact with your site, especially on touch-based platforms.

Nature can provide inspiration for any mood or mindset your web design strives to create.

When it comes to tone and emotion, nature covers the full spectrum. Fog and rain reflect sorrow or melancholy. Bright sun and blue skies convey joy, hope and purity. Wide-open landscapes and the infinite cosmos evoke a sense of adventure and excitement. And what says tranquility and peace better than the white sandy beaches of a Caribbean island?

Using natural scenery is an effective way to create an aura for your website. By employing large-scale images of beautiful landscapes as a focal point, you grab the user’s attention and immediately engage them emotionally. As soon as a visitor lands on your site, they step into an enticing virtual environment that compels them to explore deeper.

There’s much more to good website design than finding the right combination of colors and textures.

At its best, website design solves problems – finding the most effective ways to communicate a mission, to capture the essence of a brand, to tap into the psyche of a customer and to create want and desire.

Nature is unmatched in its capacity for solving problems. Nature designs things to work efficiently within the many particular nuances of the surrounding environment. Everything found in nature – from the tallest mountain to the tiniest microscopic organism – is designed in a specific way to accomplish a specific goal. To attract or to blend in. To shelter, to protect or to evade.

The same rules apply to good web design: every individual element must be planned and implemented to serve a specific purpose. In this way, nature serves as inspiration not only to designers but to architects and engineers as well.

Web Design Fatigue

A little burnout can cause big problems when it’s time to work. In fact, the creativity involved in designing a web site requires more energy than you think. If you need inspiration, it’s time to get away from the work and find other ways to keep your brain active.

Watching cartoons is an excellent way to get your creativity started. Laughter, excitement and cleverness creates signals to the left hemisphere of your brain to relax. Relaxation is key to managing potential work stress and a few Bugs Bunny/Elmer shows can make a creative person have an epitome. Think about it. Remember how difficult it was to draw graphics for your client this week? Try to draw Bugs Bunny running away from Elmer and then work on your new design.

Visit your local park for a short spurt of excitement. Get on the swings and move your legs around to circulate blood to carry oxygen to your brain. Major body movements can make an impact to your health which can get rid of the fatigue you’re experiencing during your work. Go to the park anytime you want to get in touch with your inner child; you may find some inspiration hidden in your swing across the monkey bars.

Take pictures of interesting buildings. Buildings have distinctive layouts when you view their locations in a city. Tap into your spatial awareness by focusing on certain angles of a building to catch the shadows on a city block. Challenge your inner photographer to emerge; you may find some great buildings to include in a professional web design for a prospective client.

Have you ever worked with water-based paints? Buy a large poster board and water-based paints from your local art store. Go to a quiet place and place all of your paints and poster board where you can lay across the floor without interruption. Are you ready to get some real inspiration? Finger paint.

Keep the process simple by using your hands, water-based paints and a large white poster board. Draw anything you want with your hands, laugh, play and enjoy yourself. You may find that letting go of some of your worries for an hour is just what you need to create an amazing website.

Participate in web design competitions. Competition brings out the best in us. If you can find a web design competition online, enter to win. Take a weekend or a week to complete your submission for prizes. If you notice yourself facing a challenge head on, you will start approaching each project with a new mindset; the change of energy and involvement could strike a sense of creativity you are missing.

Website Design Inspiration Should Make Good

Website design inspiration can be acquired by keeping a close watch and being on top of what’s going on in the world of design. An attractive web design is the cornerstone for traffic that converts to leads.

Well-designed website

Inspiration is the first step to a successful and a well-designed website. However the design inspiration that you or your team have, have to be grounded in reality. It should be realistic enough to make good business sense.

Ideas for a well-designed website can come from studying brands and different businesses, watching how they are using innovative designs for business. Visiting their sites can provide strong source of inspiration and ideas.

Various industry designs

Take note of the websites and designs that you admire, note the sites’ feel. You can get enough inspiration from such designs and use them around your brand when necessary. You don’t always have to look into the designs of your niche industry. Look at various industries and pick up ideas from wherever possible.

Designs from consumer perspective

Create design from the perspective of a customer. It is they who will be buying your product or services and any communication should be tailored from their perspective.
Even in a B2B company, designs should be made from consumer perspective. Determine which websites will be appreciated by consumers.

Research design inspiration

To get the right website design inspiration one has to be actively involved in research. Follow the trends which continue to change and evolve. In the fast evolving world of web design nothing remains static. The best designers are those who continue to monitor the trends, analyses them and selects the ones best suited to their needs.

Major trends in design don’t just come about. All established trends show symptoms of appearing at least a year in advance. Every years may not see major design trends appear, but small gains can definitely be observed during each year.

Appearance of the website

Too much importance need not be placed on the appearance of the website. There are factors such as usability, information which are more important. There are sites which are created for selling something. There are others which provide information resources. To ensure correct usability, make sure that your visitors are able to access the information they are looking for.

It is crucial for your website to have a good navigation. A good navigation system allows the visitors to move from one page to another with ease. Standardize the location of your navigation bar on every page of the site. Apart from navigation bar, provide short-cuts to the areas your visitor is likely to move.

Image overload

Nowadays it is easy to clutter a website with images. Do not overload your site with images as it may take the visitor away from the main communication. Moreover, there should be enough space between images and text to give visitors breathing space.

A Guide To Breaking The Web Design

For an industry that is known for being creative, there doesn’t seem to be much creativity going on with web design these days – everyone is too concerned with what’s “hot” and what’s on trend to focus on trying to inject some sense of creativity into the work. But it’s time for a change – it’s time to break this web design cycle and begin a new one that has creativity at its core.

Direct and Indirect Inspiration

Most designers will focus on direct sources of inspiration, but you should spend an equal amount of time looking at indirect sources, too.

  • Direct inspiration is from any source that is directly associated with the web design field, including CSS galleries, magazines, and so on.

  • Indirect inspiration is from any source that is not directly associated with the web design field, including nature, art, history and so on.

Use the following tips to ensure that your work is the subject of the best inspiration you can find:

  • Get off your computer

  • It is time that designers understood that a computer is not a creative machine – it is a tool that allows you to bring your own creative ideas to life. Whenever you feel that you are lacking in inspiration take a short break – go for a walk (bring a sketchbook or a camera with you) to get a more refreshing outlook on life.

  • Walk through local hardware and department stores

  • Believe it or not, shops are full to the brim with unique and interesting things. The next time you are shopping, wander around the aisles and take everything in, especially the kitchen appliances section. Take note of the different shapes and displays of the objects in these stores. Grab some paint cards from the hardware store for easy mixing and matching.

  • Explore your natural world

  • Whenever you have some free time, go for a walk or take a blanket outside and simply lie down. If something grabs your attention, make a note or a sketch of it. Don’t just draw a tree that you think looks nice, however – try to figure out why you find it so attractive. It might have a distinctive shape or striking colours.

At the end of the day, you cannot forget to use your imagination. All of the inspiration in the world will not help you to create better web designs if you do not use your imagination to transform these ideas into the websites that grace our computer screens on a daily basis. And remember that you can use anything in your life as inspiration – the indirect sources are always the best ones.

Inspiration Ideas From Magazine Layouts

When you think about it, web pages – particularly informational ones – aren’t so different from pages in magazines. Websites obviously have the advantage of linkable content, thus broadening the reach of the subject matter and allowing readers to delve deeper into a particular subject, but that doesn’t mean that the principles of print design cannot successfully be applied to web design.

With that in mind, here are just five principles of print page design that can be applied online to really make your web pages stand out.

1. Hero image
They say a picture paints a thousand words; that’s what your hero image should do. As soon as someone lands on your web page, they should know exactly what it is they are dealing with. If you’re a florist, choose a picture of a beautiful bouquet of flowers; if you fix cars, get a picture of someone with their head under the hood of a gleaming automobile. While it may sound like a simple idea, some websites insist on using generic shots of people smiling to try to convey warmth and an approachability. Your hero image should do that: and then some.

2. Typography
Grab the nearest magazine to you and flick to a feature. What do you notice about the typefaces? It would be a surprise if there were more than three used across the whole feature: one for the headline and smaller headlines, one for the actual feature and perhaps another for the captions. If any others look a little different then chances are they are from the same family as on of the others, but are in bold or italic. Using the same typeface throughout adds a sense of coherence and makes the piece hang together. Likewise on your website; choosing a headline font, body font and “other” font will help in giving your site a sense of continuity.

3. Pull quotes
A pull quote is literally a great quote from the article “pulled” and displayed more prominently on the page. Here’s the trick: it doesn’t have to be a great quote from a well-renowned celebrity, it can encapsulate your site’s core values or highlight a particularly strong statement you want to impart on your visitors. Take a look through your home page. Is there something there that you feel sums up your site in fewer than 20 words? Pull it out and make it a feature.

4. Drop-in pictures
A page would look pretty bland with just the hero shot. You need to maintain visual interest by including a few more pictures on your pages. You could even try combining a pull quote with a smaller image, perhaps of something your website does alongside its main function, or you could decide that this is the place to drop the image of folks smiling that other sites consider to be their hero image.

5. Box outs
On a magazine layout, a box out acts as a contrast to the main piece while supporting (or opposing) the arguments being made. It will usually be in a box all to itself, and is often displayed in a contrasting colour so as to highlight as different from the main piece. In web design, your box out could be a couple of client testimonials, it could be brief list of the services you offer, or a price list – the key is that it again acts as an area of contrast and something else to draw the eye. It is like a picture that doesn’t need to use pictures.
